Upcoming Samsung Phones 2014: The Fastest Samsung Handset On The Planet

For the past couple of weeks, we have seen one of the upcoming Samsung phones for 2014, and it certainly looks like the Korean tech giant wants to directly aim at the upcoming 4.7-inch version of the iPhone 6.
According to several leaked images and reports, the Galaxy Alpha, Samsung's answer to the smaller iPhone 6, will be the manufacturer's first smartphone to actualy get a metal frame.

While it is not the news we wanted - we certainly would have wanted a metal case from front to back - it is still considered a huge leap for Samsung who have always settled for polycarbonate plastic in its flagships.
The interesting thing to point out here is that aside from the rumored chipset, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is actually a high midranger.

The upcoming Android smartphone gets a 4.7-inch display with only HD (1280 x 720) resolution, compared to the QHD (2560 x 1440) display of the Galaxy S5 LTE-A for Korea, and the Galaxy Note 4.
Other  specs of the Galaxy Alpha include a 12 or 13MP primary camera, possibly with OIS, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of built-in memory without microSD card expansion, eerily similar to that of the iPhone.
However, what most reports and consumers are waiting for is the Exynos chip that will come with the device. There are some rumors which claim that the Samsung Galaxy Alpha would get the company's latest Exynos 5433 chipset, which in a previous benchmark trumped the latest Qualcomm chip, none other than the Snapdragon 805.
If the Exynos chip outperformed the Snapdragon 805 in a smartphone that has a QHD display, then theorethically, it should be leaps and bounds faster in just an HD screen.
Is Samsung finally launching a no-compromise handset just to match Apple's iPhone 6? That's still uncertain right now, though if the rumors do pan out to be true, then we could see one of the closest mactchups between Apple and Samsung in recent years.

Top 5 Most-Popular Android Smartphones of 2014

Wow, we had a busy winter and early spring, at least in terms of new Android phones. This year kicked off with CES 2014 in January, and was followed quickly by Mobile World Congress 2014 in February where we had our first look at the Galaxy S5. Then, in late March, we were introduced to the HTC One (M8). Smartphone makers certainly aren’t sitting still — who could expect them to? — and that means the market is ripe with some new devices.

So, of course, we’re here to bring you our latest quarterly listing of the top 5 Android phones on the market. As usual, these are not in any specific order. Yes, we think the One (M8) is the best Android phone on the market right now, but we know tastes differ among consumers. Let’s get started.

1. LG G3

The LG G3 can be easily termed as the most powerful Android phone in the market today (July 2014).
The device is the latest entrant into the market with LG having launched the phone in June.

It arrived into the UAE market this month (July).

Display-wise it has a 5.5 inch screen and a 2,560 x 1,440 (Quad HD) resolution and is powered by a quad-core (Qualcomm Snapdragon 801) Krait 400 processor.

Another significant feature of the LG G3 is its 13 MP camera that comes with a laser autofocus for taking much faster pictures.

While the 16GB device comes with a 2GB RAM the 32 GB model has a 3GB RAM.

The expandable memory slot can take an SD card with upto 128GB memory. A 16 GB model of LG G3 can be currently purchased in the UAE for Dh2,199.

2. HTC One M8

The phone stands out in terms of design and specs with its metallic finish and an equally powerful processor.

Like last year`s HTC One M7, the latest edition retains the design elements with a metallic uni-body finish that flows right up to the slightly bigger 5-inch, full HD (1080p) display.

With a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, and a 2GB RAM, the device is definitely faster compared to the previous edition.

The ultrapixel dual camera in the smartphone - the first of its kind in a mobile device is actually a 4MP camera that uses larger sensors for low light conditions.

HTC initially launched the device in three colours – Grey, Silver and Gold. It later introduced additional versions adding a red variant and a Harmon Kardon edition.

The device can be purchased today in the UAE at Dh2,199.

3. Samsung Galaxy S5

The device holds the distinction of possibly being the number one selling Android smartphone so far this year. Samsung unveiled the device at Berlin in February with some new features - water and dust resistant, additional sensors to measure heart rate, a pedometer to track and measure the walking distance, calories, speed, duration, and so on.

Samsung received a lot of flak for persisting with the same design as that on the Galaxy S4.

The hardware however is powerful enough with a 2.5 GHz quad core krait 400 processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset and a 2GB RAM.

The S5, however, comes with a 2800mAh removable battery. The device is currently available here in the UAE for Dh2,099.

4. Sony Xperia Z2

Sony’s latest device is a power horse. The Xperia Z2 was also announced at the MWC but Sony failed to roll it out into retail stores for several months.

It only arrived here at the local and regional markets last month in June. The most impressive feature of the phone is its camera – thanks to its 20.7 MP sensor and is capable of recording 4K videos.

The device incorporates the latest Sony TV display technologies.

In terms of design, the phone looks similar to its predecessor. The phone comes with a one-piece aluminum frame with glass panels all around. Sony has however increased the display size of the Z2 to 5.2” offering high-resolution Full HD Triluminos Display with X-Reality and a 1920 x 1080 progressive scan at 423 pixels per inch.

In terms of hardware the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 3GB RAM and also a large 3200 mAh battery.

The device can be currently purchased in the UAE for Dh2,199.

5. Lenovo Vibe Z

One of the first devices to be launched in the regional market this year Lenovo Vibe Z is the company’s first smartphone that is LTE-enabled.

The design of the phone looks wanting for improvement with a  polycarbonate plastic body and weighs just 147 grams.

The phone has a 5.5 inch screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad-core 2.2GHz processor, 2GB RAM and up to 16GB of internal storage, apart from a 13MP rear and 5Mp front camera.

The device can be currently purchased for Dh1,499.

Micromax Canvas Knight A350 With 2GHz Tru Octa Core Processor

First things first. This is a phone from Micromax, but it does not look like a phone from Micromax. In fact, it looks like a phone from a well-heeled international brand, the sort that Micromax wants to become in the near future. This is the Micromax Canvas Knight, the phone that will take over the flagship mantle for the company from today.
Quick Tech Specs: 5-inch IPS display (1920×1080 pixels, 443 ppi) | 2GHz Tru Octa core MediaTek MT MT 6592 processor | 2GB RAM | 32 GB storage + no microSD slot | 16MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, 1080p Full HD video | 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 | 2350mAh battery | Android 4.2 JellyBean
Price: Rs 19,999.
Design: As I said this phone does not look like a Indian phone. In fact, it has the cuts and sides of the Apple iPhone 5s and even reminded me a bit of the Lava Iris Pro 30, which also had a similar design language. The unibody design is reinforced by what seems, and feels, like a graphite frame. There are mico-SIM slots on both sides that can be accessed by a pin. And, no there is no space for a SD card. Another thing that sets this phone apart is the power key, that is now placed along with the volume keys on the right. This take a bit of getting used to.
The camera, the 16 MP sensor that it houses, results in a significant bump on the rear and there is an extra rear cover to sort of protect it. This feature is a bit like the one on the Nokia Lumia 502 and it becoming common in slim phones with large cameras. The phone is very light and easy to handle despite the large screen.
Screen & Audio: The Full HD IPS panel is one of the best features of this phone. To start with, there is hardly any light bleed on the sides. The phone can be bright enough to be legible in bright sunlight. The audio quality is good, but not great. The overall experience, however, is quite good.
Performance: This is a Tru Octa core phone. So performance should not be, and is not, and issue at all. In fact, the Antutu benchmark scored it in the top draw and exclaimed ‘amazing’. Yes, that doesn’t mean much for an average used. What matter for him is the fact that there is no lag anywhere and that multi-tasking is a breeze. We tried multi-tabbed browsing on Chrome and the experience was superb.

Karbonn to launch Dual OS - Android-With-Windows Smartphones

Homegrown mobile phone-maker Karbonn Mobiles is all set to launch dual-OS (operating system) devices, which will support both Android and Windows, by June.
The company has just signed the licence agreement with Microsoft to make Windows-based phones and will put this along with its existing Android system to bring out the dual-OS phones in about six months, the company's chairman Sudhir Hasija said.
This comes soon after Nokia moved out of its Windows-only strategy to launch low-cost smartphones that run on the Android operating system.
"Microsoft has eased the regulations and is opening up its platform for other players. We signed the agreement two days ago and will launch a range of Windows phones in about three months," Hasija said. The dual-OS phones will be out by June, and will target office-going professionals and 'techies', he said. The company is yet to zero in on the price range.

Karbonn, which at present sources all their products from Taiwan and Korea, is actively working on setting up a manufacturing unit in India, with a capacity to make one million phones a month. While local manufacturing will not give any cost benefits, it will help with faster turnaround of new launches in the market, Hasija said. The company is considering Tamil Nadu to set up its factory since the state has access to ports and a precedent in the supply chain for mobile phone manufacturing with the Nokia factory.

New launches apart, the company will also focus on driving up sales using apps that promote augmented reality. On Friday, Karbonn launched a range of mobile and tablet apps that use augmented reality to bring out features and games related to characters from the movie Kochadaiiyaan with Rajinikanth in the lead role.

The company will also soon start making interactive hoardings and newspaper-advertisements where the characters in the hoarding/newspaper will come alive in 3D through the app on the phone.
